Parks & extensions — distances & fees
From published TANAPA/NCAA bands and typical private tours. Not a quote—use to compare parks; ask us for line items.
Serengeti National Park
Endless short-grass plains, kopjes, and seasonal river systems host the world’s most filmed terrestrial migration as well as year-round predator action. Camps are positioned by sector (south / central Seronera / western corridor / north) to match wildlife movements and your available nights.
- Distance from Arusha (road)
- ~320–380 km to central gates (often 6–8+ h with stops; commonly split or combined with flight).
- From Kilimanjaro (JRO)
- Typically routed via Arusha or Karatu; same-day Serengeti arrival is a long drive—many guests overnight en route or fly.
- Air hop (indicative)
- Arusha–Seronera / Kogatende ~45–70 min scheduled charter bands; commonly $200–$450+ per person one-way (carrier & season dependent).
- Altitude
- Most game drives ~1,400–1,850 m; higher on some kopjes.
- Published conservation fee (foreign adult, indicative)
- Often cited ca. $60–$83+ per person per 24 h entry depending on season & TANAPA notice + ~18% VAT; vehicle & concession fees extra when applicable.
- Private full-day on safari (all-inclusive ballpark)
- Mid-luxury lodge or camp packages often land around $450–$900+ per person per day when vehicle, guide, meals, park fees & lodging are bundled—luxury higher.
Day-trip reality: A “same-day” Arusha–Serengeti–Arusha game drive is rarely practical; Serengeti works best as a multi-night block inside the ecosystem.
Ngorongoro Conservation Area & Crater
The world’s largest unflooded volcanic caldera concentrates grassland, forest, and permanent water in a dramatic bowl—exceptional for black rhino chances and dense general game in a single morning-to-afternoon descent. The rim is cool at night; the floor is warmer and dustier.
- Distance from Arusha
- ~180–210 km to Loduare / main NCA gates (~3.5–4.5 h paved & dirt mix).
- Altitude
- Rim lodges often ~2,200–2,400 m; crater floor game drives ~1,700 m (cooler mornings, bring layers).
- NCA entry (foreign adult, indicative)
- Published NCAA conservation fees are commonly quoted around $70–$80+ per person per 24 h + VAT (verify current tariff).
- Crater service fee
- An additional per-vehicle crater descent fee applies (often published around $250–$300+ per vehicle per descent in recent seasons—confirm at booking).
- Typical day trip
- From Karatu / rim: crater floor 6–10 h including descent, picnic lunch, ascent. From Arusha same-day is possible but a very long day; we usually recommend a rim overnight.
- Indicative add-on for crater day
- When crater fees are shared across 4–6 guests in one vehicle, the per-person crater fee impact often falls in the $80–$180 range for that day—varies by group size and vehicle logistics.
Tarangire National Park
Baobab-studded savannah and the Tarangire River attract large elephant herds—especially June–October when wildlife concentrates along water. Fewer vehicle hours than Serengeti make it ideal as a first or last safari leg from Arusha.
- Distance from Arusha
- ~115–140 km to main gate (~2–2.5 h).
- From JRO airport region
- Often +15–30 min versus central Arusha, depending on lodge.
- Altitude
- ~900–1,100 m in most game-drive areas (warm days, cool season mornings).
- Published conservation fee (indicative)
- Often ca. $45–$50+ per adult per 24 h + VAT depending on season.
- Full-day private safari (excl. flights)
- Vehicle + guide + fees + mid lodge night nearby frequently quoted in the $350–$650 per person band for a single full day + overnight outside park—wide variance by lodge tier.
Tarangire pairs well with Lake Manyara on a compact two-day northern loop before Ngorongoro or Serengeti.
Lake Manyara National Park
A compact park along the Great Rift escarpment: groundwater forest, lake views, tree-climbing lions (when luck aligns), and prolific birdlife including flamingos when water levels suit. Easiest half- or full-day safari from Arusha.
- Distance from Arusha
- ~120–130 km to gate (~2–2.5 h).
- Altitude
- Lake shore near ~960 m; escarpment viewpoints higher—layer for misty mornings.
- Published conservation fee (indicative)
- Often ca. $45–$50+ per adult per 24 h + VAT.
- Half-day vs full-day
- Half-day circuits suit tight schedules; full-day allows deeper southern tracks when open.
- Indicative private day trip (2 guests, mid tier)
- Land-only guided day from Arusha with vehicle & park fees often quoted in the $280–$480 per person range—confirm vehicle sharing & season.
Zanzibar—Stone Town & Coast
Post-safari recovery on spice-island culture, dhow sunsets, and reef-lined beaches. Stone Town is UNESCO-listed; east and north coasts offer calmer swimming tides on different seasons. We coordinate domestic flights, meet-and-greets, and resort pacing.
- Distance / access
- Sea level. From Kilimanjaro (JRO) or Arusha (ARK) to Zanzibar (ZNZ): flight typically ~1–1.5 h; indicative one-way fares often $80–$220+ per person (airline & bag rules vary).
- Altitude
- 0–50 m coastal—no acclimatisation concern after Kilimanjaro.
- Stone Town day experiences (indicative)
- Guided heritage walk + spice farm: often $45–$95 per person depending on group size & inclusions.
- Coast & marine day trips
- Snorkel / sandbank / dolphin-watching excursions commonly $55–$130 per person depending on boat class, marine park fees, and transfers.
- Boutique beach stays (indicative nightly)
- Comfort $180–$350, luxury $400–$900+ per room—seasonality & board basis shift pricing sharply.
Marine park fees (e.g. Mnemba, some reefs) are usually payable locally in cash or card—your final voucher lists what is prepaid vs paid on site.
